CalFresh Awareness Month is a comprehensive effort across Los Angeles County to increase access and participation in food assistance and to reduce hunger and promote good nutrition. CalFresh is critical to good nutrition for many families. This program increases household food budgets, allowing families to put healthy and nutritious food on the table. GO DIRECT All federal benefit payments will be electronic by March 1, 2013. People currently getting benefit checks need to switch to an electronic payment option by March 1, 2013. People who apply for federal benefits will need to choose an electronic payment option – direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or to a Direct Express® Debit MasterCard® card – from the beginning.

The Go Direct® campaign is helping federal benefit recipients sign up for, or transition to, electronic payments for these federal benefits on or after March 1, 2013:

>> Railroad Retirement Board
>> Office of Personnel Management
>> Department of Labor (Black Lung)

The U.S. Department of the Treasury recommends two electronic payments options:

  • Direct deposit. People with checking or savings accounts can sign up to get their money by direct deposit. Their federal benefit payment will go straight into their account on payment day each month. On time, every time.
  • Direct Express®card. Those who don’t have a bank account or prefer a prepaid debit card should switch to the Direct Express® card. Money will be posted to the card account on payment day each month. There’s no need to wait for the mail or to make a special trip to cash a check. Cardholders can make purchases and get cash back with purchases at no charge anywhere Debit MasterCard® is accepted. There are no sign-up fees, overdraft fees or monthly fees. People who do not choose an electronic payment option by March 1, 2013, may be issued a  Direct Express® card.
