Types of Abuse

Inflicting physical force, causing pain or injury upon an older adult.

Examples include:

  • Hitting
  • Pushing 
  • Restraint

Sexual abuse is when a person touches, fondles, has intercourse, or engages in any other sexual activity with an older adult.  It is also abuse when the older adult is unable to understand or consent, feels threatened, or is physically forced to do something.

Examples include:

  • Intercourse
  • Inappropriate touching 
  • Inappropriate undressing

Verbal or non-verbal actions can be defined by causing fear and confusion, assaulting, threatening to abuse, harassment, or conducting intimidating behavior.

Examples include:

  • Yelling
  • Ignoring
  • Insulting

Restraining or isolating an elderly person for non-medical reasons is confinement/isolation as well as intentionally preventing them from receiving mail, telephone calls or visitors.

Denying life necessities - which includes, but is not limited to:

  • Personal hygiene assistance
  • Providing medication
  • Medical care
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Shelter
  • Therapeutic devices
  • Other forms of physical assistance
  • Removal from a caregiver/center without consent, resulting in exposure to the dangers of emotional, physical, or mental harm, safety hazards and/or malnutrition

Further examples include:

  • Leaving him/her in an unfamiliar place
  • Not replacing hygiene products
  • Missing important doctor appointments


The illegal or unethical exploitation and/or use of an elder’s funds, property, or other assets.

Examples include:

  • Use or misuse of their money
  • Use or misuse of their credit cards
  • Use or misuse of checks 
  • Deciet through way of scams, fake prizes, fake charities, etc.
