The department provides building and safety services for Los Angeles County. Services include building inspection and permits, construction/development permits, electrical permits, grading permits, mechanical permits, plumbing permits, septic system permits, and sewer connection permits. The County requires property owners to obtain permits for construction, remodeling, demolition, relocation or removal of any commercial or residential building or structure. Services are restricted to residents of unincorporated Los Angeles County and cities which contract with the department.

The department inspects buildings to evaluate damage and safety. This includes declaring them structurally safe or unsound. It also issues grading, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits. Additionally, the department provides information and requirements for plans, zoning, sewer connections, setback lines, cesspool or septic tank installation and building materials. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Walk in to apply for a permit; call for specific counter service hours, for information or to request an inspection. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are set fees for services which vary based on the permit and work to be done.
