Continuing Education ( Brain Disorders )

Provider: USC FAMILY CAREGIVER SUPPORT CENTER

The center provides services for people caring for adults who have permanent, severe, or progressive brain impairments which occurred after the age of 18 and live in Los Angeles County. Services include respite care for adults, support groups, specialized information and referral, support services and workshops. There are no geographic restrictions.

General support services include information, consultation, referral, and training services. In addition, the center provides printed material about various brain impairments for the public and workshops which focus on caregiving-related issues and concerns for professionals. The purpose of the program is to assist families and caregivers with the numerous questions, problems, and stresses that accompany caring for a loved one who has a chronic brain disorder to facilitate their ongoing care.

The center provides information and referral about brain impairments and resources which are available for caregivers. People may call for this information or it may be provided as part of a consultation session in which counselors assess the needs of the brain-impaired person and his or her family, assist the family to explore possible courses of action and care options, and offer information and referral.

The center also provides monthly support groups which offer caregivers the opportunity to share experiences, ideas, and feelings with others. Training workshops for caregivers are also available. The center does not provide case management services but can assist caregivers to assess their own needs and those of the brain-impaired person, to identify resources that can help, to advocate on their own behalf, and to make informed decisions. Services may be brief or ongoing, depending upon the family''s needs. The professional training offered by the center consists of workshops which deal with brain impairment, patient management, long-term care and related legal and financial issues as well as the needs of family caregivers.

The Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) provides support to unpaid caregivers caring for frail, elderly relatives, and to older adults providing care for younger family members. The program provides access to support services including respite care, caregiver training, support groups, and counseling.
