Legal Counseling ( Families With Children, Low Income )

The program provides legal services for youth and families with children age 18 and younger in Los Angeles County. Services include foster care and special needs adoption legal services, benefits assistance, emancipation of minors, guardianship assistance, individual advocacy, legal counseling, legal representation, organizational development and management services, school system advocacy and special education advocacy. Income restrictions apply for some services; there are no geographic restrictions.

The agency also provides health care advocacy and technical assistance on legal issues for foster children and children with juvenile delinquency issues. The agency does not provide custody, child support, or divorce assistance.

Foster Care Adoption: The agency finalizes adoption for children in foster care and assesses every case to ensure that the child is receiving all services and benefit to which he/she is entitled.

Probate Guardianship: The agency offers guardianship assistance and provides court representation in some instances.

Foster Care Benefits: The agency assists foster care providers and probate guardianship caregivers to obtain all benefits to which they are entitled including foster care benefits, financial assistance for child care, Cal Works, Medi-Cal, adoption assistance payments and . Representation at fair hearings provided.

Health Care: The agency assists children to access health care services by appealing Medi-Cal denials, and by identifying available medical providers for children in court care.

Special Education: The agency assists disabled and learning impaired children in foster care receive appropriate special education services. Representation is provided at mediations, and due process hearings.

Emancipation: The Next Step Project assists youth transitioning from foster care to obtain all available services and further assists emancipated foster and probation youth ages 18 to 25 who need legal services or assistance obtaining with a range of legal problems including sealing juvenile records, dealing with outstanding tickets and warrants, consumer issues, and contract disputes.
