Outreach Programs ( AIDS/HIV Issues )

Provider: ASIAN AMERICAN DRUG ABUSE PROGRAM - OUTREACH SERVICES

The agency provides HIV/AIDS services for people in Los Angeles County. Services include AIDS control; outreach programs to the homeless population; and technical assistance related to AIDS prevention, substance abuse and HIV for agencies that serve the Asian/Pacific Islander population. There are geographic restrictions for some services.

The direct service component of HIV/AIDS outreach targets the homeless population in the Crenshaw area (SPA 6). The agency provides a team that conducts on the street outreach to at risk substance abusers and homeless people to prevent HIV/AIDS, to provide HIV/AIDS testing, and specialized information and referral to health and other community services. If the individual has a substance abuse problem, in addition to HIV, the person may be served by the agency's Outpatient Services unit.

The agency also cooperates with the Asian-Pacific AIDS Intervention Network Team, a program of Special Service For Groups (see the separate entry) to provide technical assistance to other Asian-Pacific social service agencies on AIDS issues. The cross training includes AIDS prevention/education; substance abuse education; and culturally-sensitive methods to deal with AIDS issues with the Asian-Pacific population in Los Angeles county.
