Parent Child Interactive Therapy

Parent Child Interactive Therapy

Provider: SAN GABRIEL CHILDREN'S CENTER INC

The agency provides mental health services for youth ages 12 to 18 in the residential program and for children and youth ages two to 18 in the outpatient program who live in the San Gabriel Valley. Services include children's/adolescent residential mental health services for boys; individual, group, and family counseling; parent child interactive therapy for children ages two to five; psychiatric day treatment; volunteer opportunities in special events planning, mentoring, tutoring, and storytelling and Wraparound services. Age restrictions apply; there are no geographic restrictions.

Boys' residential program is provided in six home-like centers that include supervision, behavior management and modification, medication monitoring, community activities, educational activities, physical activities, arts and crafts, transportation to and from most family activities, and access to medical, educational and psychiatric care. The program also provides needs assessment, clothing, allowance, and allows for personal self-care. Some boys attend an off-site day treatment intensive program; all boys participate in therapeutic groups that may include skill development, community meetings, and recreation therapy.

Outpatient program includes individual, group, and family counseling. Clinicians develop individualized plans for each child that may include therapeutic recreation, age-appropriate activities to promote vocational development, and strategies to reintegrate into the community.

In addition, therapeutic behavioral services are available to youth age 18 and younger with serious emotional problems who are living at home but have been hospitalized within the last two years or live in or are at risk of moving to a group home. Staff help clients and family, caregivers, or guardians learn new ways of controlling problem behaviors and ways of increasing the kinds of behaviors that will allow clients to be successful.

PCIT is an evidence based program for young children who may have serious behavioral problems such as aggressiveness, defiance, temper tantrums and oppositional behavior. Therapy focuses on improving parent-child interaction patterns to reduce the possibility of physical abuse.

The center also provides Wraparound Facilitation services for children with multiple, complex and enduring mental health and behavioral problems in family settings. An individualized Child and Family Team (CFT) organizes, implements, and oversees a custom plan for each family and works closely with a DCFS social worker.

Volunteer opportunities include special event planning, mentoring, tutoring, and storytelling. The agency recruits for assistance with planning birthday parties, monthly activities, and other events throughout the year. Mentors are needed to work with youth ages 16 to 18. Individuals must be 18 and older to become tutors, homework helpers, or storytellers. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call to apply; an appointment is required for most services. A referral from Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), Probation, or Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) is required for wraparound services. Full scope Medi-Cal is required for therapeutic behavioral services, including outpatient counseling. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE Medi-Cal and vendor/vouchers are accepted.
