Parent/Child Activity Groups

Parent/Child Activity Groups ( Developmental Disabilities )

The program provides early childhood education for families with infants and toddlers ages birth to 3 years of age who have developmental delays or who are at risk for delays. Services include early intervention and parent/child activity groups. Age restrictions apply for all services; geographic restrictions apply for some services.

Early intervention services are provided through an infant development program provided at the Life Steps Children Center locations. The service area for Life Steps Children Center includes Alhambra, El Monte, Hacienda Heights, Monterey Park, Pico Rivera, Rowland Heights and Whittier. The service area for the Palmdale Office includes Lancaster and Palmdale. Each program plan is individualized for each child and family and address the six developmental domains: cognitive skills: a child's ability to learn, think and solve problems; gross motor skills: large muscle coordination; perception/fine motor skills: use of the hands and fingers; communication skills: comprehension of others, development of both expressive and receptive language; self-care skills and socio/emotional skills: the child's personal reactions to the social culture in which he/she lives. The ratio of teachers to children in the center is 1 to 3. Skilled teachers along with speech pathologist, occupational and physical therapist and nutritionist provide services in the home or at the center. The Wee Play Program offers a parent/child activity peer group for toddlers and parents, in a natural environment that includes activities enjoyed by all children and families regardless of differences in development. Activities are designed to attract children's interests as teachers help them socialze, make changes from one activity to another, develop attention skills, use language and cope with emotional challenges.
