The organization provides animal services relating to the protection of whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals and their habitats. Services include library services, marine mammal protection, printed materials, research funds and special libraries. There are no geographic restrictions.

The organization provides education and advocacy services and also funds research related to the protection of whales, dolphins, and porpoises and other marine mammals and their habitats and ecosystems. It publishes a journal, Whalewatcher; newsletters; and other printed information about cetaceans and the issues that affect them. It also trains people who act as docents on whalewatch boats; and produce educational tools like the Whale Fact Pack and Dolphin Fact Pack.

The organization also maintains a cetacean research library which is available for public use. In addition, it holds biennial conferences for the exchange of information about whales and the discussion of issues that affect them on an international basis.

The society's conservation programs include maintaining a representative who monitors new legislation for its effect on the marine environment, advocating for legislation to protect marine mammals, networking with other wildlife organizations, attending International Whaling Commission meetings, and participating in other activities to educate the public and influence world opinion.

The office listed above is the national headquarters of the society. It administers the organization's six chapters and houses the cetacean research library. People who become society members receive the journal and newsletter, discounts on whale watching trips, and information about how to help save the world's whales and dolphins. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call or write for information. People who become members may affiliate with one of the society's chapters which are located in; Los Angeles, Monterey, Orange County, San Francisco, Santa Barbara-Ventura, California; and Puget Sound, Washington. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for information or use of the library; donations are welcome. There are different categories of membership for people who are interested in supporting the organization; the basic active annual membership donation is $45. All members receive the journal and newsletter.
