The agency provides library services to individuals in Los Angeles County. Services include computer and related technology classes, ethnic collections, foreign language collections, government publications, large print materials/collections, patents and trademarks, library assistant volunteer opportunities, library services, municipal libraries, public internet access sites, reading encouragement volunteer opportunities, recordings for the blind and dyslexic, special library collections. There are no geographic restrictions.

The library's collection includes books, periodicals, DVDs, audio tapes, video tapes and reference materials which are available for use by people of all ages. A rare book collection is available for use at the Central Library. Branch libraries also maintain special collections which are of interest to specific audiences and have computers with Internet access.

The Central Library is a depository site for Government information published by the U.S. Government Printing Office, U.S. Patents and Trademark Office, United Nations and State of California. The Library also provides access to selected publications of the City of Los Angeles and the County of Los Angeles.

The Central Library is a member of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Program and assists the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in disseminating patent and trademark information to the public. It offers computerized searching of patents, trademarks and copyrights and also has collections in print and microfilm.

Selected documents are provided from the Library's databases and web pages lists which are available at the Central Library and Branches.

The International Languages Department contains a multi-language collection which includes language learning and research materials. It also provides a language learning center. The Chinatown branch provides computer classes for people who speak Chinese and Vietnamese; call for more information.

Children's services include cultural enrichment programs, story hours and summer reading programs.

The Grandparents and Books is a volunteer program for older adults. Volunteers read books to children, or listen to children read to them. Volunteers are given training to develop their reading aloud and other book sharing skills and spend two to ten hours per week with the program.

The library recruits, trains and places volunteers for its special programs and for to support regular library activities and services. Docents conduct tours of the Main Library and its services for individuals and groups. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call or walk in for information or service. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees to use the library or to apply for a library card. Fines are assessed for overdue or lost materials.
