Rent Payment Assistance

Rent Payment Assistance ( AIDS/HIV )

Provider: APLA HEALTH & WELLNESS

The program provides housing services to persons living with HIV/AIDS, their families, HIV/AIDS service providers and to community members interested in sharing housing with people living with HIV. Services include housing search assistance, low cost home rental listings, moving expense assistance, rent payment assistance, roommate/housemate matching assistance and section 8 housing choice vouchers. There are no geographic restrictions.

Specific programs include Housing Information Services Clearinghouse (HISC); Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Short Term Assistance Program (STAP); Section 8; Shelter Plus Care; and the Emergency Hotel & Meal Referral Program. CHIRP provides information and referral to all forms of housing in Los Angeles County, including permanent housing, emergency shelters, transitional housing and residential facilities. The program provides listings of available housing options.

The HOPWA-STAP program provides financial assistance for people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. Assistance is available in the form of move-in grants and shallow grants. Move-in grants can be used to pay security deposits and other moving costs. Shallow grants are available every 90 days.

Section 8 subsidized housing is offered through Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). To access Section 8 through APLA, eligibility must be determined through the client's housing case manager.

Emergency Hotel and Meal Vouchers are available to individuals who are referred by an APLA case manager or another agency and qualify for the program. People with significant others or family members may also qualify.

Roommate referrals are provided for HIV positive adults, and HIV-negative individuals who wish to share housing with HIV-positive people.

Each referral list given to clients states each housing provider's level of knowledge about the program, so that the client is able to make his/her own choices about disclosure.
