Senior Community Service Employment Programs

The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) receives Older Americans Act funds from the State Department of Aging to provide mandated services for senior citizens who live in the City of Los Angeles. It funds multipurpose senior centers that are located in 15 aging service areas and provides telephone information and referral to a wide variety of resources which are available to seniors that include advocacy, in-home assistance services, case management, caregiver support groups, caregiver trainings, an emergency alert response system, legal assistance, nutrition programs, prescription expense assistance, recreation, and transportation.

The agency also participates in the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) funded by federal Title V of the Older Americans Act. The program provides an opportunity for low-income older adults to transition into the job market through work experience in non-profit community service organizations. Services are accessible through the L A City Workforce Development One-Stop system. The department also sponsors an Emergency Alert Response System (EARS) which provides direct voice communications with an operator at the response center in case of a medical or personal security emergency. To qualify senior must be 62 years of age or older; resident of the City of Los Angeles; live on a fixed income or meet low income requirements; and be frail and homebound.

The department also participates in partnership with the California Department of Aging, in The Connections, Health, Aging & Technology (CHAT) Program. Los Angeles City seniors may be eligible to receive an iPad with customized applications, data plans, and technical assistance. Seniors or their caregivers can call the Department at (213) 482-7252, for a referral to a local Multipurpose Senior Center. Older adults must meet federal low-income guidelines to particpate in the SCSEP. Call for information on the Family Caregiver Support Group.
